Massage Therapist applicants who do not hold a license in another state must take the applicable exams.
No examination is required for massage therapy instructors, continuing education providers, or the owners of massage therapy establishments or massage therapy educational programs.
Your massage school must report to TDLR that you have completed the required minimum amount of education and training before you will be allowed to take the appropriate massage exams.
To become eligible, you must complete all requirements in Texas Administrative Code Section 117.20, which includes completing an approved massage therapy studies program of at least 500 hours.
You must submit a massage therapist license application before an examination can be scheduled.

To become eligible for the Texas exam, an applicant is not required to complete the 500 hours in a licensed massage therapy school. They could also complete the 500 hours in a college or a school out-of-state.
When you are eligible to take the exam, you will receive an email notification from PSI, which is TDLR’s vendor for administering exams across the state. This email will include instructions on how to register and pay for your licensing exam.
NOTE: Applicants who take the TDLR State of Texas-administered exam will not have to sit for the Texas jurisprudence exam because that law and rules topics are part of the examination.
TDLR does accept the Massage and Bodywork Licensing Examination (MBLEx) administered by the Federation of State Massage Therapy Boards (FSMTB). You must contact FSMTB to schedule your MBLEx examination.
Once you have passed the MBLEx examination, you will need to send those results to TDLR before a license will be issued.
If you take the MBLEx you must also take and pass the Texas Jurisprudence Exam, which covers laws and rules specific to Texas.
To be eligible for licensure, you must have completed a course of at least 500 hours and passed an acceptable exam within the last two years.
The Texas Massage Therapist Jurisprudence Examination content is based on state rules and laws relating to the practice of massage therapy.
You must complete your examination within 30 days of paying the jurisprudence exam registration fee. After 30 days your registration will expire and your exam will be invalidated and your registration fee will not be refunded.
