Lockpicking Full Guide/Cartography Macro Guide

Post by nightshark » Sat Mar 26, 2011 1:58 pm

Adding a link to my cartography macro - viewtopic.php?f=9&t=18882

Today I GMed lockpicking, it took a very long time. Here I'll share how I did it, and perhaps someone can fill in any blanks or incorrect information.

First off, you'll need a 30/30 tinker box - 30 tinkering and 30 carpentry. A 50/50 tinker box and a GM made tinker box. You'll need about 500 lockpicks to get to 95.0 shown skill, from that point onward you won't need to buy in bulk. Just buy from the provisioner as you go.

30 - 50 Use a 30/30 tinker box (create a new char with 30 tinker/30 carp)
50 - 76 Use a 50/50 tinker box (create a new char with 50 tinker/50 carp)
Confirmation needed 76 skill is the change over. It will be obvious, just switch to GM box as soon as you possibly can.
76 - 95 Use a GM tinker box
95 - GM. Level 4 dungeon chests

Using a single box, use a macro like this for 0-95.0:

Double Click (lockpicks)
Wait for Target
Absolute Target (your box)
Pause 4.00 second
If (SysMessage "yields")
Double Click (key)
Wait for Target
Absolute Target (your box)
Pause 1.00 second
End If

It is a good idea to keep your dex at 10 until you reach 95.0 (shown) lockpicking, as it will shave .2 from what you have to manually gain later if you macroed with 25 dex. The amount of work you will have to put in from 95 - GM lockpicking is enormous and requires a lot of patience. You will, however, make a small fortune along the way and get plenty of nice jewelery. A small trick I've learned, is that completely emptying a chest will make it decay faster, allowing a new one to spawn sooner.

Here are the locations I know of which have level 4 dungeon chests. If you wish to add any level 4 dungeon chests to this list, please provide proof of a level 4 chest in that location (a screenshot of a failed pick with your LPing above 95.0).

Covetous Dragons (Level 4):
One chest spawns in here, so you can't pick the wrong one. Beware of traps on the stairs, mark a rune downstairs as TG likes to set up traps here, and also ghosts the area.

Easy spot. DecietShroom.JPG (55.38 KiB) Viewed 52266 times

Deciet Lich Lords (Level 4):
2 chests spawn, lv3 and lv4. The level 4 chest always seems to spawn on the same tile.
[Picture needed - I never failed this chest after I started this guide, before GMing picking]

Hythloth Hell Hounds (Level 2):
This chest spawns randomly around the 2 rooms. There are 2 chests, a level 3 and 4.

Hythloth Deamon Room (Level 4):
This chest always spawns in the same place, on the north-eastern side of the room.

Despise Chest 1 (Level ?):
2 chests spawn right next to each other - lv3 and lv4. They are always on the same 2 tiles and never mix. The easternmost chest is level 4.

I did not get a screenshot of failing, but this is the level 4 chest. Despise2.JPG (52.93 KiB) Viewed 52266 times Destard AW (Level 3)
One chest spawns. Dangerous spot. Destard.JPG (40.72 KiB) Viewed 52266 times The Fire Temple
This chest spawns slowly, inside the temple. FireTemple.JPG (85.06 KiB) Viewed 52266 times

Shame Islands (Level 4)
Located near the blood elementals, a single chest spawns on the same tile every time. Very easy location.

Yew Crypt
Upon entering the crypt, run directly north as far as you can go, and then go to the top level. Since chest spawning in the back room.

T2A - Ice Fiends
Very easy and safe chest to pick.

T2A - Terathan Keep
Definitely the most dangerous place to go lockpicking on the shard. Located inside a no recall zone with 2 Balrons and TG ghosting this spot 24/7. Most players would not even go near this location.

Thanks to the posters in the other lockpicking thread, I copied and pasted some of the information.
